No matter whether you're a beginner or an experienced meditator, India is a great place to learn and practice vipassana meditation.

Not only does vipassana have it's roots in India, the spirit of India also empowers the natural flow of meditation...

Vipassana is a Buddhist meditation technique that has been growing in popularity for many years. Much thanks to vipassana schools such as Mahasi and Goenka. The Goenka movement has already established 55 retreat centers round India alone!

Vipassana is a meditation technique that emphasizes awareness of physical and mental processes like feelings, thoughts and sensations.

Moreover, vipassana was the very first meditation technique I learned, so it has a special place in my heart.

India Meditation Retreats

India is a huge country yet it's quite easy to combine a holiday in India with a vipassana course or retreat, thanks to the many Indian centers. The basic courses and retreats span over 10 days. It's always a good idea to make an advance booking though.

Since India is such a big place, it's dvisable to take the great distances into account when planning the trip.

Indian Traditions

It's a tradition in India to offer the teachings, accommodation and food free of charge.

If you would like to contribute to the running of the meditation center, they'll be happy to provide you with an envelope to put the money in. Some vipassana centers have a donation box on the premises.

India also features a growing number of luxury resorts that offer vipassana courses. Make sure to check the rates carefully before making a booking.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't recommend attending a vipassana course or retreat at a luxury resort or privately owned retreat center. On the other hand, if you go to a well-established center such as Goenka, you know it's world class.

Vipassana Schools

A final note. The Mahasi and Goenka centers teach quite different forms of vipassana. If you're not happy with your meditation technique, try out the other school...

Good luck with the vipassana practice!
