This is an important question since depression is such a widespread condition.

Let's first take a quick look at the cause of depression and then how you can be of help.

It's essential to understand that it can be extremely unpleasant to live with depressive feelings and thoughts. These feelings and thoughts wear you down over time.

Now, everyone who suffers from depression is holding on to their negative feelings and thoughts which leads to unhappiness, asocial behavior and a lack of motivation.

Easing The Emotional Pain

So, what can you do to help? A first step is to give caring attention. Let her ventilate her feelings and thoughts. You don't have to say anything just be there for her and take a genuine interest in what she has to say. By giving caring attention, you help ease the mental and emotional pain.

If the person is unwilling to open up, you should encourage her to seek professional help – I strongly recommend talk therapy.

Many times it's easier to open up to a complete stranger than to someone close to you.

Healing Depression

There's nothing abnormal about feeling depressed and depression can be healed. Remember that it's unpleasant to live with depressive feelings and thoughts, so do your best to be understanding of your friend's situation.

At the same time, encourage her to start in therapy. By letting her choose the type of therapy, it's more likely to be effective.

Moreover, deep relaxation effectively dissolves physical and mental tension. This form of therapy is especially effective on light anxiety and depression. I find guided meditation helpful. No previous experience needed, practice makes perfect...

Best of luck!
